Black mold behind vanity: DIY or call a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bathroom in our villa in Jumeirah 3 has had a persistent damp smell since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. I finally pulled back the vanity cabinet today and found a patch of black mold on the wall behind it, about the size of a dinner plate. I'm worried it's spread further inside the wall. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach, or should I just call a professional mold remediation company in Dubai, and what would that likely cost?

This is a classic and unfortunately very common issue in Dubai villas, especially with our recent humidity spike. Finding black mold behind a vanity is a serious concern that I would strongly advise against handling yourself with bleach.

First, bleach is a surface-level disinfectant and is largely ineffective on porous materials like drywall and grout. It may bleach the color away temporarily, but it does not kill the root structure (hyphae) of the mold, allowing it to regrow quickly. More importantly, disturbing the mold by scrubbing it can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your bathroom and your HVAC system, which is a significant health risk.

The damp smell and the size of the colony (a dinner plate is substantial) are major red flags. This indicates a persistent moisture source, likely a slow leak from the vanity's plumbing connection or condensation, which has probably wicked further into the inter-wall cavity. A professional inspection with a borescope is essential to assess the full extent of the damage behind the wall.

In the UAE, proper remediation isn't just about cleaning; it's about solving the moisture problem and ensuring the indoor air quality is restored to standards like those outlined in Dubai Municipality's public health and safety guidelines. DIY attempts often fail to do this, leading to recurrent issues.

For a contained area like this, a professional remediation cost in Dubai can typically range from AED 1,500 to AED 3,500, depending on the extent of the damage within the wall. This includes containment, safe removal, antimicrobial treatment, and moisture control.

Given the potential for hidden damage and health implications, calling a pro is the only safe choice. For a proper assessment and quote, I'd recommend you call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
