Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. The wall feels a bit damp, and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. We're in an older building in Deira and I'm worried it's a bigger issue. Should I just clean it myself with bleach, or is this a job for a professional, and what kind of cost are we looking at for a proper fix?

Good question, and this is a very common issue we see in older Deira buildings due to the high humidity and sometimes aging AC systems or hidden leaks.
First, do not use bleach. It only bleaches the surface color and does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating the wall. More importantly, it adds moisture, which is the very thing mold needs to grow, making the problem worse. For a large, damp patch, this is a serious concern, especially with the dampness and your husband's allergic symptoms. In the UAE, this is almost certainly a job for a professional, and here's why: The damp wall indicates a moisture source, which could be a leaking pipe in the wall, capillary rising damp from the ground, or severe condensation from an improperly draining AC unit. A certified inspector will use tools like a thermal imaging camera and moisture meters to find the exact source—something you can't do yourself. Without fixing the source, the mold will return aggressively. Cost for remediation in Dubai can vary, but for a contained area like behind a wardrobe, you might be looking at a range from AED 1,500 to AED 4,000+, depending on the extent of the damage and the source of the water. This includes proper containment, HEPA filtration, antimicrobial treatment, and removal of affected materials. Given the health symptoms and potential for structural damage, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We can identify the root cause and provide a permanent solution.
