Black mold from AC leak: DIY clean or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little for a couple of months and now I’ve found a patch of black mold on the back of the wardrobe. We live in a villa in Springs and with this humidity, it’s just getting worse. What’s the best way to handle this—should I try to clean it myself or call a professional company here in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a serious situation that absolutely requires professional intervention, especially in the UAE's high humidity climate. Black mold (often Stachybotrys chartarum) from a persistent AC leak is not a DIY project.

The moisture has likely saturated the wall cavity behind that wardrobe, creating a hidden reservoir for mold growth that you cannot see or properly treat with store-bought chemicals like bleach, which only bleaches the surface and does not address the root cause. Inadequate remediation can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your villa.

Our standard protocol for a case like this in The Springs would be: 1) A certified mold inspection to assess the full extent of the contamination, including moisture mapping and air quality testing. 2) Containment of the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination. 3) Safe removal of affected porous materials (the wardrobe backing, potentially drywall). 4) HEPA vacuuming and abrasive cleaning of non-porous surfaces. 5) Application of EPA-approved antimicrobial agents. 6) Most critically, identifying and repairing the AC leak source to prevent immediate recurrence.

DIY attempts often violate the strict guidelines for proper mold remediation and can make the problem significantly worse and more expensive to fix later. For a health-safe and permanent solution, you need a professional assessment.
