Black mold from AC leak: DIY or call a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom closet has been leaking for a while and we finally opened up the ceiling panel to find a huge patch of black mold on the back of the drywall. It’s been humid for months and the smell is awful. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a mask, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Based on the description of a "huge patch of black mold" caused by a prolonged AC leak, my professional recommendation is that you absolutely need to call a certified mold remediation company. This is not a safe or effective DIY project.

The combination of Dubai's high humidity and the constant moisture from an AC leak creates an ideal environment for aggressive mold growth. What you see on the surface of the drywall is only a fraction of the problem; the fungal roots (hyphae) will have deeply penetrated the porous material. Surface cleaning with bleach is ineffective as it does not kill the roots and can actually aggravate the spores, worsening airborne contamination. The "awful smell" is a strong indicator of a significant microbial volatile organic compound (MVOC) release, which is associated with poor indoor air quality and potential health risks.

UAE regulations and best practices for indoor environmental quality require that such infestations be handled by trained professionals. We use industrial-grade HEPA filtration units to contain and scrub the air, followed by the safe removal and disposal of contaminated porous materials like drywall. The underlying cause—the AC leak—must also be identified and repaired by a certified HVAC technician to prevent immediate recurrence.

For a situation of this severity, a professional inspection is non-negotiable. I strongly advise you to contact our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive assessment and remediation plan. You can reach us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or via email at hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
