Black mold in bedroom making child sick: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Mirdif has this weird black speckled stuff growing along the bottom of the bedroom wall where the wardrobe is. It started showing up about two weeks after that big storm we had, and now my youngest son is sneezing a lot in that room. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and vinegar from Carrefour, or is it time to just call in a professional mold remediation company?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth triggered by water intrusion, likely from that storm. The black speckling and the proximity to the wardrobe (a common spot for condensation and lack of air circulation) are strong indicators. The fact your son is exhibiting allergic symptoms like sneezing is a significant health red flag and means this needs to be addressed promptly.

While many people reach for bleach or vinegar, these are not effective solutions for porous surfaces like drywall and can actually worsen the problem by adding moisture. DIY methods often just bleach the visible colour, leaving the root colony intact to regrow. In the UAE's humid climate, this is a temporary fix at best.

For a situation involving a child's health and potential structural damage behind the wall, a professional inspection is absolutely recommended. We follow strict protocols based on IICRC S520 standards for mold remediation. This involves identifying and fixing the moisture source first (a Dubai Municipality requirement for habitability), then containing the area, removing contaminated materials like the affected drywall, and using industrial-grade HEPA filtration and antimicrobial agents to properly clean the air and remaining surfaces.

Given the health implications for your family, I would strongly advise against a DIY approach. Please call our certified team for a thorough inspection. We can properly assess the extent of the growth, identify the moisture source, and provide a safe, guaranteed remediation plan.
