Black mold in closet: DIY bleach or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom's walk-in closet has had a faint damp smell since the humidity really spiked a couple of months ago. I finally pulled everything out and found a patch of black speckles in the corner on the wall behind the shelves. We’re in an older villa in Al Barsha and I’m worried it might be spreading. Is this something I can handle myself with a bleach spray, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional mold removal company to get a proper assessment and quote?

Based on the description, that black speckling in your Al Barsha villa closet is a classic sign of a mold colony, likely fueled by the high humidity we've been experiencing. While it's tempting to reach for bleach, I strongly advise against it for a few critical reasons.

Bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold root system hidden within the drywall or plaster. It only bleaches the surface visible growth, leaving the underlying problem intact to return, often worse. More importantly, disturbing it with DIY methods can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other parts of your bedroom and HVAC system.

For a proper assessment, a professional inspection is absolutely recommended. We need to identify the moisture source—it could be a minor condensation issue or something more significant like a hidden pipe leak in the villa's structure. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact extent and source, which is invisible to the naked eye. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for indoor air quality and remediation to ensure it's done safely and effectively.

For a confirmed, contained patch, professional remediation might be straightforward. However, given its location on a structural wall and the persistent damp smell, this likely requires professional intervention. Don't risk your health or your property.
