Black mold in closet: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an outside wall. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC running constantly. I’m worried it’s spreading and making my allergies act up. Is this something I can tackle myself with cleaning products from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call a professional company?

Good question. This is a common issue here in Dubai, especially with the recent spike in humidity levels. The black spots forming in your closet corner, particularly on an outside wall, are a major red flag. The "damp feel" even with AC running points to a persistent moisture problem, which is the root cause of all mold growth.

While it's tempting to grab a bleach solution from Ace, I strongly advise against a DIY approach for several reasons. First, what you're seeing is likely just the surface manifestation. The mold may have penetrated the drywall or insulation behind it, which cleaning won't address. Second, improper cleaning (like scrubbing) can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination and exacerbating your allergy symptoms. Finally, without identifying and rectifying the source of the moisture—which could be anything from a minor condensation issue to a more serious hidden leak in the wall—the mold will return quickly.

For a situation like yours, where the mold is recurring and health symptoms are present, a professional inspection is not just recommended, it's essential. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the water intrusion hidden within the wall cavity. UAE regulations, particularly from the Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for proper mold remediation to ensure it is removed safely and effectively, preventing cross-contamination to other parts of your home.

Given the location and your symptoms, this is not a wait-and-see situation. I recommend you call our team for a comprehensive inspection. We can assess the extent of the problem, identify the moisture source, and provide a definitive solution.
