Black mold in closet: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah Village Circle and just noticed a bunch of black speckles appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It's been really humid lately and I think it might be from condensation building up on the outside wall. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company to check it out properly?

Based on your description from JVC, this is a classic scenario we see often in Dubai, especially during the high humidity months. The black speckles behind the clothes on an outside wall are almost certainly mold growth, fueled by condensation due to the temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the hot, humid external environment.
While a small, surface-level patch might be addressed with a DIY approach, I strongly advise against it in this case for a few key reasons. First, using bleach or vinegar only bleaches the visible spores and does not address the root moisture problem or the hyphae (root system) embedded in the material. This leads to rapid regrowth. More critically, disturbing the mold by cleaning can aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the contamination and increasing inhalation risks, which can cause allergic reactions and respiratory issues. Given the location (a closet where spores can transfer to clothing) and the fact it's on a structural wall, a professional inspection is highly recommended. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to precisely identify the condensation points and moisture meters to assess the extent of the dampness within the wall cavity. We then take air and surface samples to identify the species of mold, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol, especially if it's Stachybotrys (toxic black mold), which requires specific containment procedures. For a proper, lasting solution that protects your health and property, it's best to get it assessed.
