Black mold in closet: DIY fix or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet on the inside wall has developed a bunch of black spots since the humidity spiked last month, and my clothes are starting to smell a bit damp. I tried wiping it down with vinegar, but it came back in a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself with stronger stuff from ACE, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company?

The black spots you're describing are almost certainly a mold colony, and the damp smell on your clothes confirms a significant humidity issue. Here in Dubai, with our extreme humidity spikes, this is a very common problem, especially in closets on external walls which can experience "cold bridging," leading to condensation.

While wiping with vinegar is a common DIY approach, it’s almost always a temporary fix. Vinegar only kills surface mold but doesn't address the root cause—the excess moisture—or penetrate porous materials like drywall and wood where the hyphae (the root system of the mold) grow. Stronger biocides from ACE might seem like a solution, but they can be dangerous to handle without proper PPE and may not be approved for indoor use under UAE environmental and health regulations.

For a small area (less than 1 square meter), you could attempt a more thorough DIY clean with a HEPA vacuum and a solution like diluted detergent. However, given that it's already recurring and affecting your belongings, this indicates a persistent moisture problem. The risk is that improper cleaning will aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other parts of your bedroom and HVAC system.

My strong recommendation is to call in a professional for an inspection. We can identify the exact moisture source (could be condensation, a small leak, or even HVAC drip pan overflow) and the species of mold, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol. For a proper, lasting solution and to protect your health and property, it's best to get it assessed.
