Black mold in closet: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Marina apartment has this weird black speckling on the back wall. It’s been there since the humidity really kicked in a couple of months ago, and the clothes inside have started to smell a bit damp. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray, or do you think I need to call in a professional cleaning company?

Based on the description of black speckling in your Marina apartment closet and the accompanying damp smell, this is a classic case of mold growth, highly common in Dubai due to the extreme humidity and condensation issues, especially in coastal areas. The constant use of AC can create significant temperature differentials between rooms and inside closets, leading to condensation on cooler surfaces, which is a primary catalyst for mold.

A vinegar solution is a common DIY recommendation, but it is often insufficient for a persistent problem. Vinegar may temporarily remove surface staining but will not address the underlying moisture source or kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like drywall. In the UAE, improper remediation can inadvertently spread spores throughout the property, exacerbating the issue and potentially affecting indoor air quality.

For a confirmed or suspected case of black mold, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture sources and conduct air and surface sampling to determine the spore count and species, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol, as per Dubai Municipality guidelines for healthy indoor environments.
