Black mold in closet: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah Park villa. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been getting worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. I'm worried it's a bigger issue behind the walls. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach, or should I call a professional mold remediation company, and what kind of cost am I looking at for a job like this?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth driven by the UAE's high humidity, particularly on an exterior wall in a villa. The black spots are likely Stachybotrys chartarum or another common species, which thrive on cellulose-based materials like drywall paper when moisture is present.

Using bleach is a common misconception and a significant error. It is ineffective on porous surfaces as it only bleaches the surface pigment and does not kill the root structure (hyphae) within the wall. More critically, bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold growth deeper within the material, making the problem worse in the long run. For a small, surface-level issue on a non-porous material, a DIY approach with a proper EPA-approved fungicide might be possible, but your case raises major red flags.

The location on an exterior wall and the progression you describe strongly suggest a hidden moisture source, such as a small plumbing leak, compromised vapor barrier, or thermal bridging causing condensation within the wall cavity. This is not a surface issue; it's a symptom of a building envelope problem. DIY attempts will not address this hidden moisture, guaranteeing the mold will return.

For a villa in Jumeirah Park, a professional inspection is absolutely recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of moisture behind the walls without unnecessary demolition. Remediation cost varies significantly based on the extent of the hidden damage, but for a contained area like a closet, you could be looking at a range starting from AED 2,500 upwards, depending on the required repairs.

Given the health risks of mycotoxin exposure and the high probability of concealed growth, call a professional. For a proper assessment and quote, call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
