Black mold in Dubai villa: remove myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's on the wall facing the outside and the room has felt really humid lately even with the AC on. What’s the fastest way to deal with this safely, and should I get a professional testing company in Dubai to check it out first?

Based on the description of your villa in Jumeirah, you are almost certainly dealing with a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, which is extremely common here in Dubai, especially on external walls. The wall behind the wardrobe is a cold surface, and with our intense humidity, moisture condenses there, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold.

Attempting removal yourself is not advisable for several reasons. First, disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home and significantly increasing the health risks, particularly respiratory issues. Second, DIY bleach or supermarket solutions only bleach the surface and do not address the root moisture problem or the hyphae (roots) growing within the wall. The mold will simply return.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is absolutely recommended. We would perform a comprehensive assessment to identify the exact species (e.g., the notorious Stachybotrys chartarum or a more common Cladosporium) through air and surface sampling, quantify the spore count in the indoor air versus outdoors, and use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact source of the dampness—whether it's simply condensation, a minor pipe leak, or a breach in the building envelope.

The fastest and safest way to deal with this is to call a certified remediation company. The process involves setting up containment with negative air pressure, using HEPA filtration scrubbers, safely removing the contaminated materials, and applying professional-grade antimicrobial solutions. Most importantly, we provide a solution to prevent recurrence, which is key.
