Black mold in shower: DIY or call a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has been turning black for a while, but after the recent humidity, I just noticed a patch of fuzzy black mold spreading on the ceiling corner above it. We’ve been living in this Jumeirah Park villa for about four years and this is the first time it’s gotten this bad. What’s the most effective way to handle this myself, or should I call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Good question. This is a very common issue here in Dubai, especially in older villas in areas like Jumeirah Park. The combination of high humidity and potential for slow, hidden leaks makes bathrooms a prime spot for mold.

Based on your description, you're likely dealing with two separate issues. The black staining in the grout is often Aureobasidium, a surface mold. The fuzzy patch on the ceiling, however, is more concerning. This indicates a persistent moisture source, likely a small leak from the shower above or condensation accumulating in the ceiling void. This type of growth can compromise building materials.

For a DIY attempt, you can try a specialized anti-mold cleaner (available at Ace Hardware) on the grout. For the ceiling patch, wearing an N95 mask, gently scrub the area with a diluted bleach solution. However, this only addresses the surface growth you can see.

Given the location and the fuzzy appearance, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. In the UAE, improper remediation can spread spores and exacerbate the problem. We follow strict guidelines based on NYS-DOH and IICRC standards to contain the area, identify the root moisture cause (like a leaking pipe or failed waterproofing), and safely remove the contaminated materials. just scrubbing it often pushes it deeper into the gypsum board.

For a proper inspection and to prevent it from returning, it's best to call a pro. You can reach our certified team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a detailed assessment.
