Black mold in wardrobe: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom wardrobe on the outside wall has started to get these black specks all over our leather bags and shoes, and I only noticed it after this crazy humid spell we had. It’s a pretty big built-in unit and the smell is really damp. Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar and bleach, or do I need to call in one of those mold remediation companies in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity, especially after humid spells, coupled with the constant cooling from air conditioning which creates significant condensation on cold surfaces like external walls. The black specks are likely the sporulating body of the mold, and the damp smell confirms an active colony.
Attempting a DIY approach with vinegar or bleach is not recommended. These are surface-level disinfectants and are ineffective at addressing the root cause. Bleach, in particular, is over 90% water, which can actually feed the mold growing within the porous materials of the wardrobe and wall. You may temporarily remove the visible stain but the underlying infestation and its health risks will remain. The porous nature of leather goods also means they may be permanently damaged and require professional cleaning. The location on an outside wall is a major red flag. This suggests the problem is not just surface mold but potentially a deeper issue within the building envelope itself, possibly due to inadequate insulation or a minor permeability in the wall, allowing humid air to penetrate and condense. This requires a professional inspection to properly diagnose the moisture source. For a built-in unit of significant size and given the involvement of valuable personal items like leather goods, professional remediation is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of moisture. The remediation process then involves containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and the use of EPA-approved, specialized biocides that penetrate materials to destroy the mold at its root, followed by hygienization of affected contents. For a proper assessment and to prevent recurrence, I recommend calling our specialists at Saniservice.
