Black mold on AC wall: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom wall in our Jumeirah villa has had a dark, fuzzy patch for a couple of months that's getting bigger, especially after we run the AC. I tried wiping it with vinegar but it just came back darker a week later. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional company to deal with it properly?

Okay, from what you're describing in your Jumeirah villa, this is a classic case we see all the time here in Dubai. That dark, fuzzy patch that grows back after you run the AC is almost certainly a persistent mold colony, and the AC unit is a key part of the problem.
First, the vinegar wipe was a good attempt, but it's not a strong enough biocide for an established infestation. It only kills surface spores and doesn't address the hyphae (the root-like structure) growing into your wall. That's why it came back worse. Using a "stronger cleaner" like bleach is also not advised—it can release toxic fumes, especially in an enclosed space, and it won't prevent regrowth either. The real issue is the moisture source. Your AC is creating a cold spot on that wall (thermal bridging), causing condensation inside the wall cavity every time the unit cycles. The mold is feeding on organic material in the drywall or behind it. You're only seeing the tip of the iceberg. Here in the UAE, tackling this yourself is risky. Disturbing it improperly can aerosolize a massive amount of spores, contaminating your entire bedroom and HVAC system, leading to potential health issues. For a recurring problem of this size, a professional inspection is 100% necessary. We use moisture meters, borescopes to see inside walls, and air sampling to identify the exact species and extent. Remediation involves isolating the area, negative air pressure, and safely removing contaminated materials. my advice? Don't risk your health or let it spread further. Get a pro to assess it.
