Black mold under shower sealant: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
My ensuite bathroom in the Marina has had this musty smell for weeks, and I just pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a ton of black mold underneath. I know it’s probably from the humidity. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and new sealant, or is it serious enough that I should call a professional cleaning company?

Based on what you've described in your Marina ensuite, that's a classic scenario we see daily here in Dubai. The high ambient humidity, combined with shower steam and potential minor leaks behind the tiles, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold under the sealant, which is often where the problem starts, not just on the surface.
While the urge to DIY with bleach is understandable, I strongly advise against it for a case like this. Bleach only bleaches the surface pigment of the mold you can see; it doesn't kill the roots (hyphae) penetrating the substrate. More critically, disturbing it by scraping can aerosolize a significant amount of spores into your bathroom air, which is a health risk, especially in a confined space. For a large infestation found under sealant, a professional assessment is highly recommended. In the UAE, proper remediation follows IICRC standards, not just a surface clean. We need to determine the moisture source—often it's a leak from the shower mixer or a failed grout line behind the wall—and address that first. Our process involves containment of the area, HEPA vacuuming to capture spores, antimicrobial treatment to kill the roots, and only then should new sealant be applied.
