Black specks in closet: mold or just dirt?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles appearing in the corner of our bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s an interior wall and I’m worried it’s from the AC unit or maybe a hidden leak. What are the definitive signs that this is actually mold and not just dirt or dust?

Based on your description, those black speckles in your closet corner are highly likely to be mold, not just dirt. The UAE's high humidity, especially when combined with enclosed spaces like closets and potential AC condensation issues, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold. Dust typically wipes away easily and is more uniform in color; mold will often feel slightly damp or slimy, have a distinct musty odor, and may smear or leave a stain when touched with a damp cloth.

Since it's on an interior wall near where you store clothes, the source is almost certainly excess moisture. This could be from a small, hidden leak in the plumbing or, more commonly, condensation from an air conditioning unit. The cold air from an AC duct in the wall or ceiling can cause the surrounding surface to sweat in our climate, providing the constant moisture mold needs.

For a definitive answer and to locate the moisture source, a professional inspection is crucial. We use thermal imaging cameras to detect hidden dampness and take air and surface samples to identify the mold species and spore count, which is important for determining the correct remediation protocol. DIY attempts can often disturb the colony, causing spores to spread.

If the affected area is larger than one square meter, UAE health and safety guidelines strongly recommend professional remediation to ensure it's handled safely and effectively.
