Can a store-bought dehumidifier fix my villa's closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed that our bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa feels damp, and some of our leather bags have started to get a bit of mold on them. I run the AC constantly, but the clothes never feel completely dry. Is this something I can fix with a store-bought dehumidifier, or do I need to call in a professional to look at the entire room's ventilation?

Thank you for your question. This is a very common issue we encounter in Jumeirah villas, especially with the high ambient humidity levels we face for much of the year. While a store-bought dehumidifier might seem like a quick fix, it is unlikely to resolve the root cause of your problem.

The persistent dampness in your closet, despite constant AC operation, suggests a localized issue with the room's envelope or ventilation system. The AC may be cooling the air, but it is not effectively removing the moisture load in that enclosed, poorly ventilated space. This creates a microclimate perfect for mold growth on organic materials like leather. A small consumer-grade dehumidifier will struggle to keep up and is a temporary, symptomatic solution at best.

The underlying cause could be several factors specific to UAE construction: thermal bridging in the external wall behind the closet causing condensation, a breach in the vapor barrier, or insufficient fresh air exchange from the AC system. Dubai Municipality's building regulations emphasize proper ventilation to prevent such moisture accumulation, and a professional assessment is needed to identify the specific failure.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified building scientists use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture intrusion without guesswork. This allows for a targeted, permanent remediation strategy.
