Can damp rug mold be causing my sickness?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our villa in Jumeirah had some water seepage in the ground-floor majlis during the storms, and even though we got most of it dried out, I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat for the past week. I just pulled back the corner of the large rug today and the underside still feels damp and has a few dark spots. Could this mold be making me sick, and what’s the proper way to get rid of it for good?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the discovery of the damp rug, it is highly probable that mold growth is the cause of your respiratory irritation. The persistent stuffy nose and sore throat are classic indicators of exposure to mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released by actively growing colonies.
In the UAE's climate, the high humidity following a storm event creates a perfect environment for mold proliferation, especially in hidden, porous materials like carpet underlay and rug backs. The dark spots you see are likely fungal colonies, which can release thousands of spores per cubic meter into your indoor air. This is a significant indoor air quality (IAQ) issue. Simply drying the surface is insufficient. Hygienization is critical. For a valuable rug, professional deep cleaning, antimicrobial treatment, and thorough drying by a specialized service is the only way to ensure the mold is eradicated. Attempting a DIY solution often disturbs the spores, spreading the contamination further. The underlying floor and subfloor must also be inspected for moisture and mold, as the problem likely extends beneath the rug. Given your health symptoms and the extent of water damage, I strongly recommend a professional IAQ inspection. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify all affected areas and provide a remediation protocol compliant with Dubai Municipality guidelines.
