Can I clean AC mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing a weird, damp smell into the master bedroom, and I finally took a look at the unit and there's black speckled stuff all around the edges. It's been getting worse over the hot season, probably from all the humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company to handle the AC system properly?

That's a very common issue here in Dubai, especially during the hot and humid summer months. What you're describing—black speckled growth around the AC unit—is almost certainly microbial growth, which includes mold and bacteria, thriving in the condensation and dust.

While the urge to tackle it yourself with bleach is understandable, I strongly advise against it. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like the insulation inside your AC unit and can actually aggravate the problem by adding moisture. More critically, DIY cleaning can aerosolize the spores, spreading contamination throughout your apartment's duct system and making the problem much worse.

For AC systems, proper remediation requires specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums, antimicrobial agents approved for HVAC use, and techniques to contain the area. The UAE's DM and Civil Defence regulations also have guidelines for indoor air quality and remediation work in residential buildings, which professionals are trained to follow.

Given that the smell is already noticeable in your bedroom, indicating potential spread, this is a job for a certified mold remediation company. We have the tools and expertise to not only clean the visible growth but also to inspect the entire system and ductwork for hidden contamination.

For a proper assessment and to get that damp smell eliminated for good, it's best to call in a professional. You can reach our certified team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an inspection.
