Can I clean AC mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a faint damp smell, especially when I first turn it on. I just noticed some black specks around one of the vent covers in the living room, and I'm worried it's mold. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or one of those sprays, or do I need to call a professional mold inspector here in Dubai to check the ducts?

Based on your description of a damp smell and visible black specks around the vent in JVC, this is a classic sign of microbial growth within your AC system, which is extremely common in Dubai's high-humidity climate. While surface mold on the visible part of the vent cover can sometimes be wiped with a damp cloth and a mild detergent, your real concern is inside the ductwork and on the cooling coils, which you cannot see or safely access.

DIY solutions like vinegar or over-the-counter sprays are not recommended. They only address the surface and can actually exacerbate the problem by adding moisture or failing to kill the spores at the root. More critically, improper cleaning can disturb the colony, causing spores to become aerosolized and spread throughout your entire apartment, significantly degrading your indoor air quality and potentially causing health issues.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation, especially in HVAC systems, must adhere to strict standards to prevent cross-contamination and ensure complete removal. A professional inspection is absolutely necessary. Our certified inspectors use specialized tools like borescopes to visually inspect deep inside your ducts and air quality tests to identify the spore types and concentration levels. This determines the correct remediation protocol, which often involves specialized antimicrobial fogging and duct cleaning.

For a thorough assessment and to protect your health and property, it's best to call a pro. You can reach our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and quote.
