Can I clean black mold from AC leak myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the wall behind the guest room wardrobe. I finally moved it today and found a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate on the wall. It’s been humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on the scenario you've described, my professional recommendation is to avoid a DIY approach and call a professional inspection and remediation company immediately. Here's why:

The presence of black mold (often Stachybotrys chartarum or other toxigenic species) behind a wardrobe due to an AC leak is a serious concern, especially in the UAE's high humidity. While a small, surface-level patch might seem manageable, the real danger is often hidden. The leak has likely saturated the drywall and potentially the insulation behind it, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold growth that you cannot see. Simply wiping the visible surface with bleach or vinegar is a temporary fix that addresses less than 10% of the problem. Bleach can actually aggravate the situation by releasing mold particulates into the air and its high water content can feed the mold roots deeper in the porous wall material.

In Dubai, proper remediation requires isolating the area with containment barriers, using HEPA filtration scrubbers to capture airborne spores, and safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials like drywall. Attempting this yourself risks significant cross-contamination throughout your apartment, potentially affecting your HVAC system and health.

For a situation like this, a certified inspection is non-negotiable. We need to identify the exact species and the full extent of the damage. Please do not disturb it further.
