Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right against the outer wall. I think it might be from the humidity, but it’s been getting bigger since the last foggy season. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

That's a very common question we get here in Dubai, especially after the high-humidity foggy seasons. The short answer is: it depends entirely on the root cause and the size of the infestation.

First, let's talk about that patch in your closet against the outer wall. This is a huge red flag. In the UAE's climate, mold on an external wall is often a symptom of a more serious issue, like a hidden condensation problem within the wall cavity or even a slow, concealed leak from the building's external cladding or air conditioning condensate drain line. Simply wiping the visible spot won't fix that.

Regarding cleaning it yourself with supermarket bleach: I strongly advise against it. Bleach is mostly water (which the mold can feed on) and its chlorine content rapidly evaporates, meaning it only bleaches the surface mold without killing the roots (hyphae) deep within the drywall or plaster. It's a temporary cosmetic fix and can actually aggravate the problem by releasing a massive amount of spores into your air during cleaning.

For a small patch (less than 1 square foot and caused by a one-off spill you've already fixed), a proper HEPA vacuuming and cleaning with a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide can be a DIY job. But given your description—it's growing, it's on an external wall, and it's in a bedroom where you sleep—this warrants a professional inspection.

We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to find the exact source of the moisture behind the wall. Without eliminating that source, the mold will 100% return, potentially causing structural damage and health issues.

For a proper assessment and a permanent solution, it's best to call in a certified expert. Give our team a call at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection.
