Can I clean black mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I just found a bunch of black spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is on the exterior wall of our villa in Jumeirah. It’s been so humid this past month and I think the AC might not be drying the air enough back there. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies?

Based on your description of the situation in your Jumeirah villa, I strongly advise against attempting to clean the mold yourself with a supermarket bleach spray. Here's why: the black spots behind the wardrobe are a clear indicator of a moisture issue, likely caused by the high humidity we experience in Dubai interacting with a cold exterior wall, creating condensation—a perfect breeding ground for mold. Bleach is a superficial solution; it may remove the visible discoloration on non-porous surfaces, but it will not kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous building materials like drywall or plaster. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize the spores, potentially worsening your children's respiratory symptoms.

The persistent cough you mention is a significant health red flag, suggesting a compromised indoor air quality. A professional inspection is absolutely necessary. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and extent of the infestation hidden within the wall cavity. Remediation is not just about cleaning; it involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, safely removing contaminated materials, and applying EPA-approved biocides to eliminate the colony at its root. Finally, addressing the source—through improved ventilation, dehumidification, or addressing thermal bridging in the wall—is critical to prevent recurrence.

For a situation involving health symptoms and structural moisture, professional assessment and remediation are imperative to ensure the safety of your family and your home. Please contact our team for a comprehensive inspection. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
