Can I clean black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be the black fuzzy patches I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is on the outer wall of our apartment in Jumeirah. It's been incredibly humid for the last month and I think the condensation might have caused it. I’m trying to figure out if this is something I can safely clean myself with bleach or if I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on your description—location on an outer wall, high humidity, and fuzzy patches—you are likely dealing with a significant Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) colony. This is a serious health concern, especially with children exhibiting respiratory symptoms like coughing.

The UAE's humid climate, particularly during summer and the recent period you mentioned, creates a perfect environment for mold. Outer walls are common culprits due to thermal bridging, where the difference between the blistering outdoor heat and indoor AC cooling causes condensation to form inside the wall cavity, unseen until the mold blooms on your interior surface.

Cleaning visible patches with bleach is a common but critically flawed DIY approach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood; it only bleaches the surface color while leaving the root structure intact. More dangerously, improper cleaning will aerosolize the toxic mycotoxins, dramatically increasing airborne spore concentration and exacerbating respiratory issues. For a colony of this suspected size and type, DIY is not recommended and is potentially hazardous.

Dubai Municipality has guidelines for healthy indoor environments, and improper remediation can violate these standards, spreading contamination. A professional inspection is absolutely necessary. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source within the wall and conduct air quality tests to determine spore count and species, which is crucial for assessing health risks. Remediation involves engineering controls like negative air pressure and HEPA filtration to safely remove the contaminated materials and purify the air without cross-contaminating your home.

For the health of your family and to ensure the problem is solved at its source, I strongly advise against DIY. Please contact our certified team for a comprehensive inspection. Call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
