Can I clean black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it’s spread along a whole section of the wall. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company for this?

Based on the symptoms you describe, especially the persistent coughing in children, this is a serious situation that requires immediate professional attention, not a DIY bleach cleanup. The presence of black mold (often Stachybotrys chartarum) and its spread along a wall section indicates a significant moisture issue, likely from a hidden leak or chronic condensation within the wall cavity, which is common in Dubai due to our high humidity and AC use patterns.

Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood. It only bleaches the surface color and does not kill the root structure (hyphae). More critically, disturbing the mold by cleaning it improperly will aerosolize a massive amount of toxic spores and mycotoxins, drastically increasing your family's exposure and potentially worsening respiratory issues.

UAE health and safety regulations for tenancy strongly advise professional remediation for any mold infestation exceeding 10 square feet due to these health risks. A certified company like ours follows a strict protocol: we first identify and rectify the moisture source, then contain the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, safely remove the affected materials, and use industrial-grade HEPA filtration and antimicrobial agents to clean the air and surrounding surfaces. A post-remediation verification test is crucial to ensure the space is truly safe.

Given the health of your children is at stake, we strongly recommend against attempting this yourself. Please call us for a professional inspection and quote. Our certified experts can assess the true extent and provide a safe, guaranteed solution.

Call 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
