Can I clean closet black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking on and off for a couple of months, and I just pulled out a stack of shoes to find black fuzzy mold all over the back wall. We’ve had the humidity set low, but the leak must have made it worse. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on what you've described, this is a serious situation that absolutely requires professional assessment and remediation. An ongoing AC leak inside a closet is a major moisture event, and the resulting black, fuzzy growth is a significant health risk.

While setting the humidity low helps with ambient moisture, it does nothing to address the saturation from a direct leak. The wall cavity and likely the insulation behind it are compromised. Bleach is a common but ineffective and dangerous choice; it only bleaches the surface mold you can see and does not kill the roots (hyphae) or address the spores. More critically, mixing chemicals in a confined space is hazardous.

In the UAE, professional mold remediation follows strict IICRC standards. We don't just wipe it away; the process involves:
1. Containment: Sealing the area to prevent cross-contamination to the rest of your home.
2. Removal: Safely disposing of porous, unsalvageable materials (like that damaged drywall and insulation).
3. HEPA Vacuuming & Antimicrobial Treatment: To eliminate all spores and residue.
4. Drying: Using industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to ensure the structure is bone-dry to prevent regrowth.

Given the extent of the damage you've described, a DIY attempt could worsen spore dispersal and expose you to mycotoxins. For a proper inspection and a guaranteed solution, you need a certified pro.
