Can I clean mold from wardrobe with bleach myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I finally pulled out their wardrobe from the wall in our Mirdif villa. The back of it is covered in black and green fuzzy patches, and it's been really humid lately. Is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here?

Based on what you've described in your Mirdif villa, this is a serious situation that requires immediate professional attention, not a DIY bleach job. The combination of high humidity and visible growth, especially behind a large piece of furniture, indicates a significant moisture issue.

Bleach is a common misconception. It only removes the surface discoloration but does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like wood and drywall. More critically, bleach is over 90% water, which can actually feed the mold colony and cause it to regrow even stronger. The fumes from bleach in an enclosed space can also be extremely harmful to your children's respiratory systems, potentially worsening their cough.

In the UAE's climate, this is rarely an isolated problem. The wardrobe acted as a trap for humidity, but the source is likely poor ventilation or a minor, unseen condensation issue within the wall itself. Disturbing it with cleaning releases a massive amount of spores into your home's air, which is what your family is now breathing.

For the health of your family and to ensure the problem is solved at its source, a professional inspection is non-negotiable. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the exact moisture source and assess the full extent. Remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobials, not bleach.

Please do not attempt to clean this yourself. For a proper assessment, call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We serve the Mirdif area regularly and can advise on the next steps.
