Can I clean mold in my Dubai villa myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing behind the wardrobe in our bedroom. It's been extra humid lately and I'm worried it's spread further inside the wall. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I absolutely need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

That's a very common question we get here in Dubai, especially with our high humidity levels. While a small, surface-level patch might be tempting to tackle yourself, what you're describing—black spots behind a wardrobe that's been there for two years—absolutely warrants a professional inspection.

Here's why: The visible spots are just the "fruit" of the mold. The main root system (hyphae) is likely deep within the wall cavity, especially if you suspect it's spread further. DIY solutions like bleach or vinegar only bleach the surface color and add moisture, which actually feeds the root system, causing it to come back stronger and spread. You'll just be masking the problem.

In the UAE, villa construction often uses gypsum board (drywall), which acts like a sponge for moisture from our humid air, especially when placed against cold exterior walls or in areas with hidden condensation or slow leaks. A proper remediation isn't just about cleaning; it's about identifying and eliminating the moisture source, containing the area to prevent cross-contamination of spores throughout your AC system, and safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials like that drywall.

For a case like yours in Jumeirah, we strongly recommend a certified mold inspection. Our team uses thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to see inside the walls without destructive drilling initially, and we provide a full lab report to identify the species and spore count. This is crucial for your family's health and for fixing the problem correctly the first time.
