Can I clean my moldy closet myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah, has started to feel really damp and has black specks appearing in the corners. It’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago, and I’m worried it’s spreading. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

Based on the symptoms you've described—dampness on an external villa wall in Jumeirah, visible black specks, and a correlation with high humidity—this is a classic case of a mold issue exacerbated by Dubai's climate. The external walls of villas are particularly susceptible to thermal bridging, where the intense outdoor heat meets the cooled interior from constant AC use, leading to significant condensation within the wall cavity. This creates the perfect, hidden moisture source for mold growth.

Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, it introduces excessive moisture, which can actually fuel further mold growth. Scrubbing can also aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the contamination to other areas of your bedroom and HVAC system.

For a situation involving an external wall and visible growth, a professional inspection is absolutely recommended. DIY methods cannot assess the extent of the moisture intrusion within the wall or the potential spread of spores. Our certified inspectors use tools like thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture and air sampling to determine spore concentration levels, which is crucial for developing a safe and effective remediation plan.

For a proper assessment and to prevent this from spreading further, I advise you to contact our team at Saniservice. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and a solution that addresses the root cause, not just the visible symptoms.
