Can I clean this mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few dark black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or is it time to call in a professional mold inspector?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of potential mold growth exacerbated by the UAE's high humidity, especially common in exterior walls where thermal bridging can cause condensation. While a small, surface-level patch might be addressed with a DIY solution, several factors in your situation suggest a professional inspection is strongly recommended.

First, the location on an exterior wall is a red flag. The mold you see is often just the surface manifestation; the root cause is likely trapped moisture within the wall cavity itself. Cleaning the surface with bleach (which we don't recommend as it doesn't kill the roots and can exacerbate the problem for some molds) or vinegar is a temporary fix at best. The mold will almost certainly return because the moisture source hasn't been identified and eliminated.

Furthermore, the species of mold is critical. That dark black coloration could be anything from common Cladosporium to more concerning types like Stachybotrys. Proper identification, which requires air and surface sampling analyzed in a lab, is essential to determine the health risks and the correct remediation protocol.

In Dubai, professional remediation must adhere to strict guidelines like the DM Code of Construction Practice. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and professional-grade HEPA vacuums and air scrubbers to contain the area and ensure spores aren't spread throughout your home during investigation.

Given it's in your bedroom closet, where belongings are stored, and it's on a critical building envelope element, this is not a wait-and-see situation. I'd advise against DIY here. Get a certified inspector to assess it properly.
