Can I fix black shower grout and smell myself?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black, and there's a persistent damp smell no matter how much I clean. It's been getting worse since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago. I've tried scrubbing it with bleach spray, but it just comes back within a week. Is this something I can fix myself with a specific product, or is it time to call in a professional cleaner?

The black discoloration in your shower grout is almost certainly active mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to our extreme humidity and year-round AC use, which creates constant condensation cycles. While bleach appears to work temporarily, it only bleaches the surface pigment and does not kill the root structure (hyphae) penetrating the porous grout. The persistent damp smell confirms an ongoing moisture problem and microbial volatile organic compound (MVOC) production.

For a small, surface-level issue, a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not bleach, applied with a stiff brush can be a temporary DIY solution. However, given that the problem recurs quickly and is accompanied by an odor, this indicates a more entrenched infestation. The mold has likely penetrated deep into the grout and possibly the substrate behind the tiles. In such cases, superficial cleaning is ineffective and can aerosolize spores, worsening indoor air quality.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified mold assessors use borescopes and moisture meters to determine the extent of the problem behind the tiles, which is critical for a permanent solution. Remediation may involve professional-grade antimicrobial application, grout removal and replacement, or addressing underlying waterproofing failures—all procedures that require expert knowledge to prevent cross-contamination and ensure compliance with local Dubai Municipality health and safety guidelines.
