Can I fix my inefficient AC or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been running non-stop to fight the Dubai heat, and my DEWA bill this month was a real shock. I’m worried it’s so inefficient it’s just wasting a ton of energy and money. I live in an older apartment in Jumeirah and I can feel hot spots near the windows. Is this something I can fix myself with weatherstripping or do I need to call in a professional HVAC company for an assessment?

Based on the symptoms you've described, your situation is very common here in Dubai, especially in older Jumeirah buildings. That constant running and the high DEWA bill are classic signs of an overworked, inefficient system, and the hot spots near the windows confirm significant thermal leakage.

While you're on the right track, simple weatherstripping is unlikely to be the complete solution. The heat gain through single-pane windows common in older apartments is massive. For a real fix, you'd need to address the windows themselves with professional-grade solar film or by upgrading to double-glazed units, which is a bigger project. The AC's inefficiency is likely a combination of this heat gain, poor insulation in the walls, and potentially an old, poorly maintained HVAC unit that has lost its refrigerant charge or has dirty coils.

For a proper diagnosis, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint exactly where the heat is infiltrating and perform tests to measure your AC's actual cooling capacity and energy draw. This tells us if the issue is the building envelope, the AC unit itself, or both.

Trying DIY fixes might save a little, but you'll be treating symptoms, not the root cause. Given the extreme climate, getting a pro to assess it will pay for itself in reduced DEWA bills. Our team can provide a full indoor environmental quality inspection.
