Can I remove bathroom mold myself with vinegar?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in my Mirdif villa has had this musty smell for weeks, and I finally found black speckles in the grout between the wall tiles near the shower. The window is tiny and the extractor fan seems weak, so it never fully dries out. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar solution from Lulu, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service?

Based on my experience with mold inspections in Dubai villas, especially in areas like Mirdif, the high humidity is a massive driver for mold growth in bathrooms. A vinegar solution can be effective on surface-level mildew on non-porous surfaces for a very minor, new issue.

However, what you're describing – a persistent musty odor and black speckles in the grout – suggests a deeper problem. Grout is porous, meaning mold mycelium can penetrate deep below the surface. Vinegar will only kill the surface layer you can see, leaving the root structure intact. It will grow back, often worse than before, because the moisture problem (poor ventilation from a weak extractor and small window) hasn't been resolved.

For a proper remediation, the affected grout often needs to be professionally cleaned with EPA-approved biocides, sealed, or even replaced. More critically, the underlying humidity issue must be addressed; this may require upgrading your extractor fan to meet Dubai Municipality standards for air exchange rates in wet rooms.

Given the symptoms, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species (some are more hazardous than others) and determine the extent of the infestation hidden behind tiles or under flooring.
