Can I remove black mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It seems to have spread since the heavy rains in January, and I’m worried it’s making my allergies worse. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or should I call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on the description of your situation, I would strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Here's why:

The fact that the mold is in a closet, has spread since the heavy winter rains, and is correlating with worsened allergy symptoms points to a potential moisture issue that goes beyond surface condensation. In the UAE's climate, these patches are often a symptom of a larger problem, such as a hidden leak in the plumbing or a breach in the building envelope from the rains, allowing humidity to penetrate the interstitial walls. Surface cleaning with bleach is highly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials (like drywall and clothing) as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, it can release a high volume of harmful spores and toxic fumes into your living space during agitation, exacerbating health risks.

Local regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for environmental health and safety in dwellings. DIY attempts that cause cross-contamination or improperly handle biohazardous waste can violate these codes. A certified professional will conduct a thorough inspection using moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the exact moisture source, perform air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count (critical for health assessment), and execute a controlled remediation following NADCA and IICRC standards. This includes containment, HEPA filtration, and proper disposal to ensure the problem is solved at its root.

For a case like yours, with evident growth and health impacts, calling a pro is the safe and effective choice. We can assess it properly.
