Can I remove black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. It’s been so humid lately and I think it might be spreading. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

That’s a very common question here in Dubai, especially with the recent spike in humidity. As a certified mold inspector here in the UAE, I can tell you that whether you tackle it yourself depends entirely on the source and extent of the growth.
A small patch, less than about one square foot, might be a DIY job if it's purely surface-level from condensation. However, your situation—a patch on an outside wall of a villa in Jumeirah—raises immediate red flags. This is often a sign of a more serious issue, like a hidden water leak from a pipe in the wall or, very commonly here, water intrusion through the building envelope from a poor seal or cracked external render. Bleach is a common but incorrect choice; it only bleaches the surface mold and doesn't kill the roots (hyphae), and the moisture left behind will cause it to return rapidly and often worse. It's also a respiratory irritant, especially in an enclosed space like a closet. For anything beyond a tiny, isolated spot, or if you suspect a leak (which you should), a professional inspection is absolutely crucial. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the hidden source of moisture that you cannot see. Simply wiping away the visible mold is a temporary fix if the water problem isn't solved. UAE regulations for villa communities often require proper remediation to prevent structural damage and protect indoor air quality, especially with the toxic black mold (Stachybotrys) that can occur. Given it's in your bedroom and you suspect it's spreading, my strong recommendation is to get it professionally assessed. We can identify the exact species and the root cause to ensure it’s fixed permanently. For a proper inspection and quote, you can call us at 800-MOLDS or 800-66537, or email hello@saniservice.com. |
