Can I remove black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that’s started growing in the corners of our master bedroom closet. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we were doing a deep clean, and it seems to have spread behind some of the stored boxes. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company in Dubai?

Based on my professional experience in mold inspection and remediation in Dubai, I strongly advise against using supermarket bleach for black mold. This is a critical mistake many homeowners make. Chlorine-based bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface pigment without killing the root system (mycelium) deep within the material. Furthermore, the high water content in bleach can actually feed the mold, causing it to return stronger.

The health risks, especially for children with respiratory symptoms like coughing, are significant. Black mold (often Stachybotrys chartarum) releases mycotoxins and spores that can exacerbate asthma and allergies. Disturbing it without proper containment and professional-grade HEPA filtration will aerosolize these spores, spreading contamination throughout your home's AC system—a major concern in Dubai where we run AC year-round, constantly recirculating air.

The presence of mold in a closet indicates a persistent moisture issue, likely due to high humidity condensing on cooler walls or a possible hidden leak. Simply wiping the visible growth does not address the source. Our humid climate is a constant catalyst for mold growth.

For a suspected black mold infestation that has spread behind stored items, a professional assessment is essential. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air quality tests to identify the full extent of the contamination and the moisture source. Remediation involves containment barriers, negative air machines with HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobial agents—not bleach.

For the health of your family, I recommend a professional inspection. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment and a safe, guaranteed remediation plan.
