Can I remove black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet near the vent. I just pulled the corner back and found a patch of black mold, maybe a foot wide, that's been growing under there for who knows how long. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it?

That's a very common question we get here in Dubai, especially with our high humidity levels. Finding black mold under an AC leak in JVC is unfortunately a typical scenario.
While a very small, surface-level patch might be addressed by a homeowner, the situation you describe—a one-foot patch hidden under carpet from a persistent leak—absolutely warrants a professional assessment. Here’s why: The visible mold is just the "fruit" of the organism; the real problem is the root system (hyphae) growing deep into the carpet fibers, backing, and likely the subflooring. Bleach is largely ineffective on porous surfaces as it only bleaches the surface color and does not kill the roots. It also introduces excessive moisture, which can actually feed the mold further. Scrubbing can aerosolize toxic spores, spreading the contamination throughout your apartment. In the UAE, proper remediation isn't just about cleaning; it's about health and compliance with villa and building standards. Our process involves containing the area with negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing the affected materials (carpet, padding), HEPA-vacuuming, and applying professional-grade biocides approved for use here. Crucially, we must identify and rectify the source—the AC leak—to prevent immediate recurrence. For a case of this size and nature, DIY is a significant health risk and unlikely to be successful long-term. I strongly recommend a certified inspection to understand the full extent.
