Can I remove closet mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Marina apartment has started to get these black specks on the back wall, and it’s been spreading over the last month or so. We keep finding our clothes smelling damp no matter how much we wash them, and I'm worried it's the mold. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I absolutely need to call one of those professional mold removal companies, and if so, what’s a realistic cost for a small area like this?

Based on your description, that absolutely sounds like active mold growth, a very common issue in Marina apartments due to the high humidity levels and potential for condensation in closets on exterior walls.

While a small, surface-level patch might be tempting to tackle yourself with bleach, I strongly advise against it. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while the roots (hyphae) remain deep within the material. This will cause it to return quickly. Furthermore, scrubbing can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination to other areas, including your clothes.

The damp smell on your clothes is a major red flag. It indicates that the mold is likely more extensive than just the visible specks, possibly growing inside the wall cavity itself. This is not a DIY job.

In the UAE, professional remediation is crucial to comply with Dubai Municipality's strict health and safety standards for indoor air quality. For a closet of the size you describe, a realistic cost for professional inspection, containment, remediation, and post-verification cleaning would typically range from AED 1,500 to AED 3,500, depending on the extent of the infestation behind the wall.

My professional recommendation is to stop disturbing the area and call for a certified inspection immediately to assess the true scope and moisture source. Please call our specialists at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a detailed assessment.
