Can I remove mold myself or need a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it’s from the mold that’s growing behind our bedroom dresser, which is on an exterior wall in our Jumeirah villa. We had that minor leak during the last heavy dew a month ago and I just found the black speckled patches. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

That's a very common question here in Dubai, especially with the high humidity we deal with. The short answer is: it depends entirely on the scale and cause.

For a very small patch (less than 1 square foot) that's on a non-porous surface like glass or tile, and you've completely fixed the moisture source, a DIY clean with a vinegar solution can be attempted. Bleach is not recommended—it only bleaches the color and doesn't kill the roots, and it can be dangerous to mix.

However, from your description, this sounds like a professional job. Here's why:

1. The mold is on an exterior wall, which in Jumeirah villas can indicate a persistent condensation or seepage issue within the wall cavity that you can't see. Just wiping the surface won't fix the root problem.

2. The link to your kids' coughing is a major red flag. This suggests the mold has likely sporulated, and airborne spores are affecting air quality and health. Disturbing it incorrectly during cleaning will release a massive cloud of spores, exacerbating asthma and allergy symptoms.

3. UAE regulations, particularly from DM and DHA, have strict guidelines for proper containment and removal to protect occupant health, which DIY methods cannot meet.

For health-related cases like yours, a professional inspection and air quality test is critical. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden moisture source, then enact containment with HEPA filtration to safely remove the bio-burden. Don't risk your family's health.
