Can I remove shower mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been getting these black spots for the past couple of months, and the damp smell lingers for hours after anyone uses it. I’ve tried wiping it down after every shower, but it’s in a windowless bathroom in my Jumeirah Park villa and the humidity just won’t budge. Is this something I can tackle with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service to stop it for good?

Based on your description of a windowless bathroom in Jumeirah Park with persistent humidity and recurring black spots, this is a classic case of a conducive environment for mold growth. While superficial cleaning can be attempted, it often only addresses the visible symptom, not the root cause.

For a temporary fix, you can use a dedicated antifungal cleaner (not just bleach, as it doesn't kill the root structure and can be harmful to inhale in an enclosed space). However, wiping down the walls and using a squeegee after every shower is crucial. The most critical step is to aggressively manage humidity. You absolutely must run a high-capacity exhaust fan for at least 30-45 minutes after showering and consider investing in a dehumidifier for a windowless room like this.

That said, the lingering damp smell is a significant red flag. It strongly suggests that moisture has potentially penetrated beyond the grout surface, possibly into the substrate behind the tiles. If this is the case, DIY cleaning is completely ineffective and the growth will continue to return. Professional assessment is needed to determine the extent of the problem. We use moisture meters and borescopes to see behind walls without damage. Remediation might involve removing the compromised grout, treating the underlying structure, and re-sealing with a high-quality, mold-resistant product.

For a proper inspection to see if this is surface-level or a deeper issue, it's best to call in a specialist. You can reach our certified team for a consultation at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
