Can I remove wardrobe mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling in our villa's walk-in wardrobe has had these dark black splotches ever since the weather got really humid a few weeks back. I tried wiping it with bleach but it just came back worse, and now my clothes are starting to smell a bit off. Is this something I can handle myself with products from Ace Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company, and what kind of cost are we looking at for a small room like that?

Based on the description of dark black splotches returning after a bleach wipe and the musty odor on your clothes, you're dealing with a significant mold colony, likely Stachybotrys chartarum (toxic black mold) or Aspergillus niger. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like ceiling plasterboard as it only bleaches the surface pigments and the water content actually feeds the root system (hyphae) deeper within the material, causing the regrowth to be worse.

In the UAE's high humidity, DIY removal from Ace Hardware products is a major health risk and will not address the root cause. The mold has penetrated the gypsum board ceiling; the entire panel likely requires controlled removal and replacement. Disturbing it without proper containment, negative air pressure, and HEPA filtration will aerosolize toxic mycotoxins and spores throughout your villa, contaminating your entire wardrobe and HVAC system.

Under Dubai Municipality regulations, remediation of over 10 square feet should be handled by a certified professional to prevent cross-contamination and ensure safe disposal. For a walk-in wardrobe, you're likely looking at a scope of 2-3 panels. Cost can vary but for proper assessment, containment, removal, and hygienization, expect an investment in the range of AED 2,500 - AED 4,500 for a professional, guaranteed job.

Stop wiping it. You need a professional inspection to determine the species and full extent. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) for a comprehensive assessment and quote. We can also test the air quality in the room to check for spore count elevation.
