Can I test for AC mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making us all a bit stuffy, and I just found some black spots along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa. We’ve been running the AC non-stop since summer started. Is this something I can test for myself with a kit from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional company here in Dubai?

Based on what you've described from your JVC apartment, I strongly recommend against using a DIY mold test kit from a hardware store. Here’s why: the hot and humid climate of Dubai, combined with constant AC operation, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold, particularly within the AC system itself and on cold surfaces like walls behind furniture.

Those consumer test kits are notoriously unreliable. They often give false negatives, failing to detect a problem, or false positives, identifying harmless ambient spores and causing unnecessary panic. More critically, they only tell you that mold is present (which is always true to some degree in the air); they do not identify the specific type of mold or its concentration—both of which are essential for determining the health risk and the correct remediation strategy.

In the UAE, proper mold inspection involves a certified professional using specialized equipment like moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air pumps to take calibrated air and surface samples. These samples are then analyzed in an accredited laboratory to identify the species (e.g., the potentially toxic Stachybotrys, or common Aspergillus) and quantify the spore levels. This scientific report is what dictates the necessary scope of work for safe and effective removal, especially important for rental properties or for health reasons.

Given the visible growth and your symptoms, this is a case for a pro. The black spots behind the sofa are a major red flag indicating a persistent moisture issue. For a proper assessment and to discuss solutions, you should call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
