Can I test for mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black spots growing along the edge of the carpet in our master bedroom, right where it meets the wall. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. Is this something I can check for myself with a DIY kit from the hardware store, or is it absolutely necessary to call in a professional company to do the testing properly?

Based on the scenario you've described – black spots at the carpet-wall junction in a humid climate like Dubai – I strongly advise against using a DIY mold test kit from a hardware store. Here's why:

Those kits are notoriously unreliable. They typically only tell you that mold exists in the air, which is always true to some degree. They cannot identify the specific species, which is critical for assessing health risks (e.g., is it toxic Stachybotrys or a less harmful Cladosporium?). More importantly, they cannot quantify the spore count to determine if the levels inside your bedroom are significantly higher than the natural background level outside. A DIY test might give you a false negative, providing dangerous reassurance, or a false positive, causing unnecessary panic.

For a proper assessment, a professional inspection is necessary, especially in the UAE. We use calibrated equipment like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the hidden source of the moisture causing the growth (likely a small leak or condensation from the AC in your case). Air and surface samples are then sent to an accredited lab for speciation and quantification. This scientific report is essential, not just for effective remediation, but also for any potential insurance claims or landlord disputes, as it serves as a legal document.

Given the location (your bedroom, where you spend hours sleeping) and the visible growth, this is a case for professionals. Don't risk your health.
