Can my AC's musty smell cause allergy symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been blowing a faint musty smell for the past couple of months, and I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat. I’ve cleaned the filters and even had the landlord check for leaks, but the damp, moldy smell always comes back. Could this constant musty air from the AC be causing these allergy-like symptoms, or is it something more serious?

Yes, absolutely. That musty smell from your AC is a major red flag and is almost certainly the direct cause of your allergy-like symptoms—stuffy nose and sore throat are classic indicators. Here in Dubai's climate, that odor is almost always a sign of microbial growth, specifically mold or bacteria, thriving within the damp, dark confines of your air conditioning system.

When you turn on the AC, the blower fan aerosolizes these microbial spores and their metabolic byproducts (known as mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds or MVOCs), distributing them throughout your apartment. You're then breathing in this contaminated air for hours, especially while sleeping, which directly irritates your respiratory tract and can trigger allergic and inflammatory responses.

Cleaning the filters is a good maintenance step, but it only addresses a small part of the problem. The growth is likely deep inside the evaporator coils, the drip pan, or the ductwork—areas you cannot properly access or clean without specialized equipment and biocides approved for HVAC use.

Under UAE regulations like the Dubai Green Building Regulations, indoor air quality is a serious concern for tenant health and wellbeing. A landlord checking for "leaks" is not a substitute for a comprehensive indoor environmental quality inspection. The issue requires professional assessment.

I strongly recommend you stop guessing and get a professional inspection. We use borescopes to inspect inside ductwork and air sampling to identify the specific type and concentration of contaminants. This will definitively pinpoint the source so it can be properly remediated, not just superficially cleaned.
