Can we remove small black mold ourselves or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the musty smell is really strong when you open the closet doors. How urgent is it that we get a professional mold water treatment company in, or can we handle this ourselves with bleach?

As a certified mold remediation specialist operating in Dubai, I can tell you that the presence of black mold, a strong musty smell, and its location on an interior wall are significant red flags. The high humidity we're experiencing acts as a catalyst, and what you see is often just the tip of the iceberg. The mold colony likely extends into the wall cavity.

While a small visible patch might tempt a DIY approach with bleach, I strongly advise against it. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold without addressing the root hyphae deep within. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize toxic mold spores, spreading the contamination throughout your bedroom and HVAC system, posing serious health risks.

In the UAE, especially in Dubai's climate, uncontrolled moisture leads to rapid proliferation. This isn't just a surface issue; it's a water intrusion issue. The urgency is high to prevent structural damage and potential health issues. A professional inspection with thermal imaging and moisture meters is essential to identify the hidden source of moisture—perhaps a leaking pipe in the wall, condensation, or capillary rise from the slab.

For your safety and a permanent solution, professional assessment and remediation are non-negotiable. We are equipped to safely contain the area, identify the moisture source, remove contaminated materials, and apply EPA-approved biocides, not bleach. Don't risk it.
