Closet mold: DIY clean or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed these black speckles in the corner, and my husband’s leather shoes stored in there are covered in white fuzz. It's been super humid the last few weeks and I think the AC isn't reaching that corner properly. Is this something I can clean with vinegar myself or do I need to call a professional company to check for a bigger problem?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of localized mold growth exacerbated by the UAE's high ambient humidity and inadequate airflow, a very common issue here, especially during the more humid months. The black speckles are likely Cladosporium or sooty mold, while the white fuzz on the leather is almost certainly a different species, likely Aspergillus.

While a vinegar solution can temporarily clean a non-porous surface, it is not a fungicide and will not address the root cause. The leather shoes are porous; cleaning them yourself may not salvage them and could spread spores. The real concern is the moisture source. In Dubai, this is often due to a combination of factors: high humidity, thermal bridging on that external wall causing condensation (the wall is colder than the room's dew point), and insufficient AC circulation.

For a closet on an external wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We need to rule out more serious issues like a minor leak from the external cladding or insulation failure, which are regulated under Dubai's strict building codes and strata laws. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture behind the wall—something you cannot DIY. Treating the visible mold without fixing the hidden moisture problem guarantees it will return, potentially causing health issues and property damage.

Don't risk it. For a proper assessment and remediation plan that complies with local standards, call our team for a thorough inspection. Call 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 to schedule.
