Could damp carpet near AC vent be making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been waking up with stuffy noses and a cough for the past couple of weeks, and I'm starting to worry it's their room. I finally got down on my hands and knees and realized the carpet near the AC vent has a really strong, damp smell, like old books. It seems to get worse right after the AC kicks on. Could this moldy smell from the carpet and vent actually be making them sick, and what's the first thing I should do about it?

Yes, absolutely. That damp, musty odor you're describing is a major red flag for microbial growth, and it is very likely contributing to your children's symptoms. When the AC kicks on, it's aerosolizing mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) from that wet carpet and pushing them directly into the breathing zone. Stuffy noses, persistent coughs, and respiratory irritation are classic signs of exposure to a damp indoor environment.

The first thing you should do is STOP the moisture source. In Dubai, this is almost always linked to the AC system. The most common culprits are a blocked condensate drain line or a leaking drain pan. The constant drip of condensate water soaks the carpet and underlay, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with store-bought solutions, as this often just disperses the spores more widely.

Given the health symptoms and the clear musty smell, this requires a professional assessment. We need to identify the exact species of mold present (some are more hazardous than others) and the full extent of the contamination, which often goes deep into the underlay and subfloor. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air quality monitors to pinpoint the source and assess the spore count in the room's air.

For the health of your family, I strongly recommend a certified inspection and hygienization. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule a diagnostic visit. We'll provide a detailed report and a remediation plan to make that room safe again.
