Could mold cause these symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain last month, I noticed a musty smell in the basement where we store the mold chiller. It's particularly strong when I open the door after it hasn't been used for a while. My kids have been complaining of coughing and sneezing every time they go down there to set up the equipment. Could this be related to mold growth, and should I be concerned about its health effects?

Indeed, the symptoms your children have been experiencing could very well be linked to mold exposure. Mold can indeed produce allergens and irritants that affect respiratory health, leading to coughing, sneezing, and other similar reactions. In Dubai, and particularly in the UAE, humidity levels can sometimes create ideal conditions for mold growth, especially in areas such as basements which are prone to moisture accumulation.

Given your description, it is highly likely that mold has started growing on surfaces within the basement where you store the mold chiller. This could be due to increased humidity from heavy rains or inadequate ventilation. Mold spores can thrive in damp environments and can produce toxins known as mycotoxins which might exacerbate respiratory issues.

For your situation, it is strongly recommended that a professional inspection be carried out by an environmental consultant familiar with the UAE regulations on mold remediation. The Abu Dhabi Environment Agency (EAD) or Dubai Municipality have guidelines for mold testing and control. Ignoring potential mold growth could lead to more severe health issues not only for your children but also for other household members.

To address this issue, we suggest taking immediate steps:
1. Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation in the basement by installing exhaust fans if necessary.
2. Drying Out: Use dehumidifiers or air conditioners to reduce moisture levels and prevent mold from spreading further.
3. Cleaning: If visible mold is present on non-porous surfaces, clean with a solution of water and detergent followed by a disinfectant.
4. Consulting Experts: Contact a professional environmental inspection company like Saniservice (call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for assistance) to conduct thorough testing and develop an effective remediation plan.

Remember, addressing mold issues early can prevent more serious health problems and costly repairs down the line. Take action now to ensure a safe and healthy environment for your family.
