Could mold from my kids' toys cause their cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately, and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled out some toys from the storage room in our Jumeirah villa and found a few boxes in the corner are covered in black, fuzzy mold, probably from the last time we had heavy dew and humidity a few weeks ago. Could this “mold water” or the spores in the air from it be what’s causing their respiratory issues?

Absolutely. As a certified mold inspector here in Dubai, I can confirm that the mold on your children's toys is a very likely culprit for their persistent cough. The scenario you've described is a classic case of indoor mold exposure.

The black, fuzzy growth you found is actively releasing microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air. When inhaled, these particles are a significant respiratory irritant. Children are particularly vulnerable due to their smaller lung capacity and developing immune systems, often reacting with symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and nasal congestion. The high humidity we experienced a few weeks ago provided the perfect "mold water" event—moisture intrusion is the primary catalyst for this kind of growth, especially in enclosed storage areas with poor ventilation, common in many villas.

It is critical that you do not attempt to clean these toys with bleach or other household cleaners. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, exacerbating the problem. The toys are likely porous and cannot be truly remediated; they should be carefully discarded.

Your priority must be a professional inspection. We need to assess the extent of the contamination in the storage room and, crucially, check for hidden moisture in the walls or subflooring that could be feeding a larger colony. This is not just about the visible mold on a few boxes. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality tests to identify the full scope of the issue, in line with UAE standards for healthy indoor environments.
